Blog Mon, 27 Feb 2017 20:56:33 +0000 Joomla! - Open Source Content Management en-gb (JoomGap) The year of JoomGap Slim Apps This year, we are introducing the concept of JoomGap Slim Apps, a new way to develop mobile app for reponsive sites. In the past, we received several enquiries about how to show a website in a mobile app. Slim Apps are our response.

In 2016, we have been mainly focused on the development of mobile apps powered by PhoneGap, Angular, Ionic and JoomGap SDK. These app follow the tradicional model of a local client that connects to a site via web services, a REST API. In this line of development, a project must implement an API to integrate a mobile app.

On the other hand, mobile browsers are currently providing a user experience on par with a desktop navigation, creating a whole new category of mobile apps. Following this trend, we have developed the concept of JoomGap Slim Apps. JoomGap Slim Apps answer the general question of how creating a mobile app for an existing website, extended with packages such us  with JomSocial, JReviews, PayPlans, EasySocial, EasyBlog, EasyDiscuss and SobiPro.

The year of JoomGap Slim Apps

How to create a SlimApp

In the simplest case, a mobile application can open a browser window to a website. Thus, a slim mobile app can visit a defined page in a site. The mobile landing page must have a responsive and mobile-friendly design; it can be the general home page or a specific page for mobile navigation. In the examples shown above, these demo apps are visiting the home page or the download page of a site. The navigation of the site is respected, and the user must log in to access restricted areas.

Even in this simplified model, features like Push Notifications or media management are available to fulfil project requirements.

Joomla as a mobile App backend #jab15 J and Beyond is about so many different things. It is the annual gathering of the Joomla developer community. It is the time where friends gather each year.

Particularly for mobile development, this session will be of our interest:

Joomla as a mobile App backend

This talk will describe ideas, principles and methods related to building mobile App backends in Joomla. The joomla front end it an ideal tool to provide app content administrators the ability to control their app. We'll look at several examples of this process for Apps developed for the UK education sector. The Apps typically use RESTful JSON interfaces to pull and push data to and from the Joomla backend.

Within Joomla the FieldsAttatch a jBackend are used and extended upon. We'll look at the Joomla solution, what we used and what we added. We'll also touch on App development, including cross platform native app development with Ti Appcelerator, continuous integration of multiple rolling releases, team skill-sets, privacy issues and business cases.

It'll be a narrative of the project's journey, ideas, paths and reflections.

Although there will be some technical detail, it should appeal more generally too.
